What is the purpose of the Wildcard feature?

The Wildcard Opt-in feature allows users to grow their list by simplifying the opt-in process. By allowing any wildcard text message to be used as an opt-in, this feature makes it easier for phone numbers to subscribe to your list.

After sending an opt-in message to the short or long code, the phone number will receive an automatic reply with a confirmation option to complete the opt-in process. This feature is only available for a single opt-in process at the moment.

How does Wildcard Feature work?

  • Step 1: users will have to enable wildcards on the list they wish to collect numbers.

This can be done by selecting the list, then mobile opt-in, then checking the box under keywords and saving changes. Once Wildcard is enabled, then any phone numbers can text the shortcode or long-code phone numbers.

  • Step 2: Filtering invalid opt-in message (including nefarious message)

If the phone number sends a message containing a nefarious word, then the system will not reply back. However, you will be able to see the incoming messages in the message history tab.

  • Step 3: Send a consent message

If the phone number sends a valid message, then we will send the API Opt-In Confirmation request message. "Consent is not required for purchase. Msg&data rates may apply."

Also, if the phone number sends a valid message, then the system will send the API opt-in confirmation request message (set up at the account level).

  • Step 4: User replies to the consent message

If the phone number replies back with a positive reply (such as yes, si, oui), then the phone number will be subscribed that has the wildcard enabled.

If the phone number replies back with anything except the above, then the phone number will receive "Invalid Response. Reply YES to receive automated recurring marketing msgs. Consent is not required for purchase. Msg&data rates may apply."

If a phone number replies back with anything except yes, again. Then the phone number should receive the "Invalid Response. Reply YES to receive automated recurring marketing msgs. Consent not required for purchase. Msg&data rates may apply" again.

If the phone number never replies back, then the phone number will be dropped after 24 hours.

  • Step 5: The phone number is subscribed

Any phone number that replies back positively and correctly will be subscribed.

How to enable Wildcard for my list?

In order to enable wildcard, you would need to enable it at the list level.

Can I set up Wildcard for multiple lists?

No, you cannot enable wildcards for multiple lists. Phone numbers opt-ins to a short code or long code. That is why only one list can have wildcard enabled.

Can my audience still opt in using keywords even if I have wildcard enabled?

Yes, if you have wildcard enabled AND a phone number sends a valid keyword to your list, then this phone number will follow the single opt-in process.

What happens to the pending wildcard phone number when I turn off wildcard?

If you turn off wildcards while phone numbers are still in progress, the phone number will be able to finish the opt-in process.

Will I be charged for wildcard messages?

Yes - customers will be charged for any wildcard message (same as the single opt-in process).

Will the user be able to segment on wildcards?

Yes, the user will only be able to segment based on the Signup Source: Wildcard. Segmentation will be included with the release of the Wildcard feature.

Which phone number can opt-in via wildcard?

As long as the phone number is not currently opt-in in progress, it can be subscribed or resubscribed via wildcard.

What are the acceptable words for providing consent?

The words accepted are: y/yes/o/oui/s/si, and it's case insensitive ("YES" and "yes" both work).
