This is how merge tags appear during message testing:

If you send a test to a mobile number that is NOT subscribed, they will see the merge tag (e.g. {FIRST_NAME}) in their test text message.

An Existing subscriber with first name data will see their name.

An Existing subscriber with NO first name data will see Friend of whatever you decide the fallback will be for that message.
